Edinburgh Castle isn't the capital's only hilltop castle. Ruined Craigmillar Castle sits on high ground a few miles south-east of Edinburgh city centre, less accessible than Edinburgh Castle but with much more chance of peace and quiet. It's an impressive, extensive site too: as well as the defensive castle core there's a dovecot, chapel and several other outbuildings. Parts of the ruin date back to the late 1300's - making this one of Scotland's older tower houses. Given its position so close to Edinburgh's centre and the fact it was abandoned by the mid-eighteenth century, it's survived pretty well.
