Beauly Priory

Beauly is a fairly attractive but fairly forgettable village a dozen miles west of Inverness, once situated on the main road north from this city before the Kessock Bridge was built over the Beauly Firth. Right at the centre is Beauly Priory, and this is worth visiting if you're nearby: this ruined Benedictine monastery was founded in the early 13th century and easily pre-dates the village surrounding it. Admission is free and the site is open daily, but avoid the area during the Belladrum music festival; this takes place for a few days each summer, causing traffic chaos on local roads... as we found out!
