Lauriston Castle

City of Edinburgh | Cramond | Stately home | ★★★★

[Lauriston Castle]

This castle's story started when the Napier family constructed a tower house here in 1593. 19th century extensions and the addition of beautiful gardens by William Playfair have resulted in a strangely little-known, higgledy-piggledy castle and tranquil surroundings, today owned by Edinburgh council. The grounds haven't quite been swallowed up by the city's advancing western suburbs; indeed, the peaceful surroundings have more in common with nearby Cramond. Entrance to the house is by (excellent) guided tour only, so plan your visit time carefully.
