Orkney | Burray | Museum | ★★★

[Orkney Fossil & Heritage Centre]

Burray might seem to some drivers like an inconsequential island on the way across the Churchill Barriers between Orkney Mainland and South Ronaldsay, but it's also home to one of the islands' best museums. The ground floor has an excellent selection of fossils from around the islands and further afield, originally a private collection. If more recent history is your thing, the upstairs floor is given over to displays exhibiting Orcadian life in the late 1800s and early 1900s. One of the most interesting parts documents how life changed with the construction of the Churchill Barriers during World War II, connecting the island of Burray to the larger islands of Orkney Mainland and South Ronaldsay.
