Claypotts Castle

Dundee City | Broughty Ferry | Castle | ★★

[Claypotts Castle]

You can't go inside Claypotts Castle, but it's an elegant and impressive tower house even from the outside. The castle is built to a Z-plan, but with some particularly intricate architectural features around the roofline. It was built between 1569 to 1588 for the Strachan family, with subsequent owners including local lairds and farmhands. For today's visitors, Claypotts is much easier to reach than your average Historic Environment Scotland property: the lawn surrounding the property backs directly onto Dundee's ring road. This does detract from the atmosphere a little but it's maybe fortunate that it still exists at all - hundreds of other historic buildings in Scottish urban areas haven't fared nearly so well!
