St Abbs

Scottish Borders | Village | ★★

[St Abbs]

This pocket-sized, Borders fishing community has been given a new lease of life as a tourist destination after it featured in the 2019 film Avengers Endgame as New Asgard, home to an alcohol-dependent, overweight Thor, king of the Norse gods. Whether the "Marvel effect" will last remains to be seen, but the village has several more strings to its bow. The extensive harbour is very picturesque, with views north towards the seabird city of St Abbs Head, a mile distant. In the other direction it's only a short walk (or drive, if you must) to the sand and rock pools of Coldingham Bay, while on the inland side the old Creel Road footpath links to the village of Coldingham itself, which features a partially ruined priory. If visiting the area for the first time, the small visitor centre at the entrance to St Abbs village is the best place to start.
