Berwick-upon-Tweed's biggest beach can be found in the former mining suburb of Spittal, about a mile from the centre of town on the south side of the River Tweed. Deposition of sediment at the river mouth has created a tidal sand bar jutting north, while in the other direction the beach extends another mile southwards into Northumberland countryside. A disused, industrial chimney adds an interesting backdrop: the only surviving part of an old manure factory.
