Look after yourself... and Scotland

Scottish Covid-19 restrictions are gradually easing. Travel within Scotland is now permitted again (hooray!), as well as travel from other parts of the UK. Travel to Scotland from outside the UK is not yet allowed, with dates still to be announced. Some accommodation and some tourist attractions have also reopened. Full guidance and the possible timetable for easing restrictions further can be found on the Scottish Government official website.

There is a lot of pent-up demand, so some areas are exceptionally busy. Here are 3 things worth bearing in mind when out and about:

[Travel within Scotland is now permitted again]

1) Be safe

  • If planning a walk, choose a route well within your capabilities. Our fitness levels may take a while to adjust after lockdown! For hill or rural walks, make sure you are properly equipped with a detailed map, compass and suitable clothing. Many higher hills are still snow-covered and may require specialist winter equipment.
  • Follow rules about maximum group sizes and social distancing.
  • Take hand sanitiser (for high contact areas such as gates) and a face covering (in case you need to enter a shop or crowded area).

2) Be responsible

  • Park safely and legally - making sure not to block access for farm vehicles / emergency services etc.
  • Take all your rubbish away with you - let's keep Scotland beautiful!
  • Always follow the Scottish Outdoor Access Code.

3) Be canny

  • Avoid crowd "blackspots" on weekends and bank holidays, especially if you can save them for a quieter time.
  • Have a Plan B if your first spot looks too busy or the car park is full.
  • Need inspiration? Browse our interactive map for ideas - we're called Scotland Off the Beaten Track for a reason!

And of course, have fun. If you're not yet able to visit Scotland, or your travel plans have been disrupted, we hope the thousands of attractions we feature online are useful for planning future trips.
